ASHLAND, Wis. (AP) - Authorities say a device found in the debris of a garage fire in Ashland that looked like a military mortar round turned out to be a harmless training round. Firefighters in the northwestern Wisconsin city discovered the device Friday. As a precaution, homes within a two-block radius were evacuated. A National Guard ordnance disposal unit from Duluth, Minnesota, came to investigate and determined it was just a practice round.
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) - Attorneys for a man accused of killing a Ledgeview woman say there's evidence her boyfriend was the killer. Lawyers for 39-year-old George Burch contend in a motion Friday the boyfriend had motive and opportunity to kill 31-year-old Nicole VanderHeyden last May. It's up to the judge whether Burch can present that story during his trial in October.
MILWAUKEE (AP) - Authorities are investigating the death of a man whose body was pulled from the Kinnickinnic River in Milwaukee. The Milwaukee Drive Team was called around 10:30 a.m. The medical examiner's office says a man's body was pulled from the river. Few details have been released. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.
HAYWARD, Wis. (AP) - Authorities are investigating the deaths of three people found inside a home on the Lac Courte Oreilles (la-coot-oh-ray) Reservation near Hayward in northwestern Wisconsin. The tribal police department says the bodies of the two men and one woman were found Thursday morning. Preliminary autopsy reports indicate they died of carbon monoxide poisoning. The victims' names were not immediately released.
