DETROIT (AP) - President Donald Trump's spending plan for 2018 includes $77.6 million for operation and maintenance of Great Lakes shipping channels and related infrastructure, including the lock system at Sault Ste. Marie. The money would go to projects in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Detroit district. The projects involve functions such as hydropower, navigation and flood risk management.
MARINETTE, Wis. (AP) - A Wisconsin attorney has decided to resign, saying an unmanageable workload and a lack of resources is driving him away. WLUK-TV reports that Marinette County District Attorney Allen Brey is resigning next month. He and other Wisconsin prosecutors have been asking for more resources for years. The attorney general's office said in a statement to the TV station that nearly all Wisconsin DA offices are struggling with the workload.
LACROSSE, Wis. (AP) - A retired police dog who suffers from a genetic condition that's left him unable to use his back legs is enjoying mobility once more thanks to the generosity of strangers. The La Crosse Tribune reports that Brutus, a retired La Crosse police canine, received a wheelchair this month from Gunnar's Wheels. The 10-year-old German shepherd retired in May after being diagnosed with degenerative myelopathy, a spinal cord disease.
MANITOWOC, Wis. (AP) - Prosecutors dismissed a homicide case against a Minnesota man accused of killing a 52-year-old Wisconsin man but say they're still investigating and may refile the case later. The Manitowoc (MAN'-ih-toh-walk) County District Attorney's Office said in its motion to dismiss earlier this month "there is insufficient evidence" to convict 23-year-old Quinn Orn Smith for Kor Yang's death.
