MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Somali-American legislator Ilhan Omar has made history by winning a Democratic congressional primary in a Minneapolis-area district so reliably liberal that her victory is likely her ticket to Congress. Omar drew national attention just two years ago by becoming the first Somali-American elected to a state legislature. She's running for the seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The sudden downfall of Sen. Al Franken amid the rise of the #MeToo movement set up a two-woman race for his seat, part of an unusual primary featuring both of Minnesota's Senate seats on the same ballot. His successor, Tina Smith, easily won her primary, and the endorsed GOP candidate, state Sen. Karin Housley, did too. Minnesota's other senator, Democrat Amy Klobuchar advanced to face state Rep. Jim Newberger.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Former Meriden Mayor Manny Santos has won the Republican nomination for the U.S. House seat being vacated by Connecticut Rep. Elizabeth Esty of Connecticut, who came under fire for her handling of a sexual harassment case in her office. The party's endorsed candidate defeated Ruby Corby O'Neill, of Southbury, and Rich Dupont, of Watertown, in Tuesday's primary. Santos has called President Donald Trump's economic policies "dead on" and has vowed to fight tax increases and unnecessary spending.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Attorney General Lori Swanson is conceding defeat in a three-way Democratic primary for Minnesota governor. Early returns in Tuesday's primary showed Swanson trailed U.S. Rep. Walz and state Rep. Erin Murphy considerably. Swanson had been considered a top contender since launching a last-minute bid for governor but her campaign was marred by late allegations of pressuring official employees to aid her political ambitions.
